The Reason Team Cherry's Latest Title Is So Dang Hard, As Explained by Its Developers

Just about all Silksong players can agree on a single fact: the game is notably demanding. Developer Team Cherry has openly discussed the game's difficulty at an industry event hosted by Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

Hornet’s Enhanced Abilities

"Hornet is inherently faster and more skillful compared to her predecessor — meaning that the base level enemy had to be more complicated, more intelligent," commented one of the game’s directors Ari Gibson.

Another team member noted, "Unlike opponents from the first game, her adversaries had to have more ways to intercept her as she tries to evade."

This design philosophy led to enemies gaining new abilities to evade and check the player’s movements.

Balancing Challenge

Team Cherry intended to elevate other elements to complement her enhanced skills," perhaps did so a bit too much. Consequently, an initial update made some bosses a bit less daunting to overcome.

This update followed community creators tried to make the game somewhat more manageable for computer players.

Using the World to Your Advantage

As a exploration-driven game, the sequel promotes getting immersed in its world. This openness serves as a method to work around its steep challenges.

"Silksong has certain segments that are intensely tough — but part of allowing a higher level of freedom within the world ensures that gamers possess options all the time about where you’re going and their actions," Gibson said.

He noted that it's "fine" if players are stuck against a tough enemy because there are methods to mitigate the difficulty by exploring, mastering mechanics, or even bypassing the obstacle altogether.

Additional Content

Alongside the exhibition, a printed 64-page zine dedicated to the game has been released. It includes exclusive concept art, early drawings, cartography and a new interview involving the developers.

This publication celebrates the creative vision, universe construction and enduring influence of the original and its sequel, Silksong. It’s available worldwide, though it'll cost a premium price.
